Thomas Speer McNair (1824-1901), Pennsylvania civil and mining engineer, inventor of the McNair inclined standard transit. He was born in Hanover Township, Dauphin County, Pa., son of Thomas McNair and Agnes (Nancy) Ferguson McNair. In 1847-1853, he worked as a schoolteacher in and around Hazleton, Pa. The McNair family were descendants of Thomas McNair (1737-1830), native of Parish of Donaghmore, County Donegal, Ireland, who came to America and settled in Hanover Township (Lancaster, now Dauphin County) Pa. James Birtley McNair (1889-1967), American chemist and botanist, specializing in economic and chemical botany. He was born in Hazleton, Pa., son of Thomas Speer McNair and Mary Stevens McNair. He received his A. M. from the University of California, Berkeley in 1917. In 1922-1925, he studied at the University of Chicago, and later worked as chemist for various state and federal agencies, including United States Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries, and the Internal Revenue Service.
